Quinley
Quinley  the Blue Fox

Once upon a time, there was a fox named Quinley who had a cozy little burrow deep in the forest.Quinley was a very different fox. He wasn't red or brown or even grey like most foxes. He was a beautiful sky blue. He had bright button-black eyes, scratchy whiskers and a long, lovely blue tail which he was very proud of. He would spend hours brushing it every night. In fact, his tail was one of the few things he liked about himself. Quinley didn't much care for the way he looked. He hated being short. He was half the size of the other foxes,  and had never gotten any bigger. Other foxes used to pick on him most terribly. Whenever he wanted to play with them, they would say, "Go away, you Little Blue Freak, we might step on you by mistake." And so Quinley was often lonely. As he grew older, he began to notice the pretty girl foxes. Whenever he tried to talk to them, though, they would point at him and laugh. "Blue! Blue! Little Blue Quinley!", they would giggle. Naturally, this upset him.  First, he got angry. "I hope they get eaten by bears!", he said. Then, he got vindictive. "Someday", he vowed, "Someday when I'm King or something, then they'll be sorry they laughed at me!" But then, he just got sadder and lonelier. Quinley began to think he would spend the rest of his life alone. Everywhere he went, animals would stop and stare with their mouths hanging open, or worse, start laughing. Some of the foxes thought it was funny to play tricks on him. One day he was walking along through the forest, minding his own business, and trying not to notice how everyone was laughing at him, when suddenly, one of the foxes who often acted as his tormentor stuck out his big fat foot and tripped him. Splat! Quinley went face down in a mud puddle. Everyone began to laugh uncontrollably. "That's it.", he thought. "I might as well just stay here in the mud for the rest of my life. No one would care." Suddenly he saw two fuzzy paws in front of his nose. "Probably someone else come to laugh at me. Well, let 'em. It doesn't matter." Then he heard a soft voice say, "Need any help?" Quinley raised his head. There, standing over him was the most beautiful vixen he had ever seen. Her voice was like the warm summer wind softly rustling through the trees. She had eyes like rippling moonlit pools. But Quinley didn't see any of that. The only thing Quinley could see was that she was pink! Pink! The most alluring color, like clouds at sunset. She was pink and she was smiling at him! She held out a paw to help him up. Quinley grasped her hand and stood up. As he stood, he realized that this was the first girl he had ever met who did not tower over him. In fact, she was a few inches shorter! How was this possible? Quinley's mind boggled. Quick, he had to think of something to say!  "H-H-Hi. M-My name's Quinley.", he stammered. He waited, half expecting her to burst out laughing and say 'Quinley? What kind of stupid name is that?'. Then this perfect moment would be over. But she didn't. She just smiled even bigger and said, "Hi Quinley. My name's Vivian." Quinley's heart felt like it would burst for all the joy filling it. "Vivian, I've been looking for you all of my life ." Vivian gave another heart-breakingly beautiful smile. "Me too.", she said. " I just migrated here. Pretty lucky, or else we never would have met." "No. ", said Quinley. "This was not luck. This was destiny." Looking down, they both realized that they were still holding hands. Slowly, they walked hand in hand toward the sunset, and away from the other animals they could no longer see. They were the only two people  in the whole world. As the animals saw their amazing happiness, one by one, each stopped laughing, until slowly, the laughter died, and all were silent, watching the couple walk leisurely into the sunset. It seemed as if a door had opened in the sun and they were actually walking into it, the sheer pure light of the orb burning off all trace that they had ever been touched by sadness. As the animals watched, the two foxes seemed to  disappear. In fact, they did disappear.  One second their silhouette could clearly be seen against the orange sun, and the next, they were gone. There were many theories about what had happened to them. Some said they had been transported to another world full of others like them. Some said they were all crazy, that those two were probably still in the forest, if only someone would care to look. But no one did. Still others said that there had never been any blue or pink fox, that it was all part of a mass hallucination caused by those tricky hunters. But it was mostly hedgehogs who said this last thing, and everybody knew hedgehogs were just plain stupid. But what everyone didn't say, and thought to themselves, was the feeling of jealousy they had of such pure love, the kind of love they themselves would probably never experience. Local gossips hashed over it for years. Whatever the truth, it is certain that wherever they went, Quinley and Vivian lived happily ever after.
